I hope everyone is having a very enjoyable summer so far! We are getting ready to start another great school year. All families should have returned a registration packet by now. Also, the parents all incoming 6th graders should have visited our main office to show proof of residency. If you have not done so, please contact us. Information packets (which include student schedules, team assignments, team school supply lists, and other announcements) will be mailed home toward the end of next week. We are looking forward to seeing everyone soon.

In efforts to assist students racing off to catch the bus, Stratford Student Council will be selling Nutrigrain bars and juice boxes before school for $.50 each. When the 7th and 8th graders arrive to school, they are invited to the student cafeteria to get a snack. The 6th grade students can go to Mrs. Miesse's room (214). Students will have about 15 minutes to get in, get a bite to eat, get to their lockers, then to first period before 8:00. Checkout the newsletter article and parent letter for additional information. This comes just in time for ISAT testing. Studies have shown students perform better with a good night's sleep and a little breakfast to get them going.

October ends with a successful Walk-A-Thon fundraiser on Thursday, 10/29. Val Brady did a great job organizing the event and making the last minute changes to hold the event on Thursday rather than Friday because of weather conditions. Several students won prizes just for bringing in pledges. Carol Stream's Mayor Saverino supported the students and staff by joining the 8th graders and donating bottles of water for every student. We'll keep you posted on how much the students raised for the PTA as the week ends.

On Friday, Stratford celebrated the PBIS accomplishments for this school year. As of 10/30, we had almost 100 fewer discipline referrals than we did last year at this point. The assembly included K-9 police dog units from Wood Dale and Glendale Heights. They demonstrated the skills and knowledge of the dogs and the officers explained the intensity of their training. In addition, we celebrated the fact that Stratford won the "Most Fabulous School Culture Award"! This award and trophy goes to one school (out of 60) in DuPage County who demonstrates outstanding progress towards implementing the PBIS framework. This program takes 3-5 years to fully implement. We are entering our 3rd year and are working very hard at making this progress.

Be sure to set up a conference time to meet with your team of teachers on November 23rd or 24th from 12:00-8:00.

Did you know?
Your student is going to receive a new ID card. This ID card will have a bar code on it. Now the ID card can be swiped, like a debit card to purchase lunch. You can manage the account by following the directions on the ccsd93.com website. The new ID card your student's ID on it. All students know their ID number (they use it for computer log in) and it is also found on the PIV letter that was mailed to you.

What's New?
-We are rapidly moving into the month of October, and it's starting to feel like it. Please be sure the students are dressed warm enough and dry enough if they are waiting at bus stops or going outside for PE.
-PIV (Parent Internet View) started last week. It sounds as though the program kicked off very smoothly. We have had very few glitches and a few lost passwords. If there is anything we can do to help, please contact your student's team of teachers or the office.
- HIP (Homework Intervention Program). This program got started this week. We offer a daily opportunity for students to "Drop In" to HIP. Students could stay after school until 4:00 to complete homework and/or missing assignments. Teachers (with parents) may decide a student needs to attend HIP for a 3 week period to re-establish a routine of completing homework and getting it turned in on time. For the "Assigned HIP", teachers, parents, and students need to communicate that HIP is the appropriate intervention at for that period of time.

First, the fugitive has been caught and is in custody. This morning, we received notification that the fugitive had robbed a bank in Bloomingdale and that we should be in "lock down" mode. We communicated with our Superintendent and ran our Crisis Plan by following a Yellow Schedule and a Red Schedule. As we received updates, reports, and direction from Bloomingdale Police and Dr. Shields, we resumed our Regular Schedule. Our students and staff are to be commended for doing a great job with the events today and for their patience and flexibility. Thank you for your support.

Thank you to all of our parents who attended Curriculum Night. We hope it provided an opportunity to learn about all of the great things that will be happening in the classroom this year. If you were unable to attend and have any questions about curriculum, PIV, or anything else, please contact your team of teachers or grade level administrator. Reminder - every parent should be receiving a PIV letter in the mail. This letter will have your student's login and password so that you could view his/her grades online. Updated grades are available as soon as a teacher enters them into the electronic grade book. Free computer access is available at each of the buildings in D93.

On Tuesday, September 8, at 11:00, President Obama will deliver a national address the students of America through a live broadcast. Stratford will not be assembling students to view the broadcast as a building activity. However, classroom teachers may have decided to incorporate this as a lesson or unit activity. If this is the case, the teacher would have communicated this to all parents of students in the class and required parent permission for each student to view the broadcast. The teacher/parent communication also would include the curricular plan and explanation for the broadcast during classtime. If a parent chooses not to have their student participate in this class activity, an alternate educational lesson activity will be planned for him/her. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this, please feel free to contact me.

Welcome Back! We had a great day on Wednesday and concluded with an all school assembly. Mr. Tom Boz incorporated his magician talents with our PBIS focus of Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Proud. Thank you for all of the communication regarding student schedule issuses and bus concerns. We are working on making all neccessary corrections. This school year is off to a great start.

Tuesday's Meet the Teacher seemed to go very well. There were some schedule change needs that were shared but it seems we were able to make the corrections without too many problems. On Wednesday, all students will receive a "latest edition" of their schedule, their locks and their locker assignments - all from their Advocacy teacher. With so many students moving in and out of Stratford, we needed to spend the past few days working to balance teams and class sizes; it will not be uncommon if your student had a schedule change within the past day or two. Please contact us if you have any questions. Wednesday will consist of a shortened schedule and an all school assembly before being dismissed at 11:00.

Just a reminder, the orientation is for all students who are new to Stratford. We will have a building tour and explain a few procedures to help with your transition. If you attended the orientation with your 5th grade class in May, this will be very similar but you are more than welcome. Tomorrow's orientation is 1:00-2:00.

The PTA Meet and Greet last night was a great experience. Thank you all who attended. A special Thank You to Cindy and Anna for putting it together. If you were unable to attend, the PTA meeting dates were distributed - hopefully we'll see you at an upcoming meeting. Also, there are a few committees (3), which still need a chairperson. Please contact Cindy or Anna if you are interested.
